字鹤田、鹤颠,原为福建莆田人,侨居常熟。继承了汪关华丽典雅的风格,因此人们将他和汪关、沈世和合称为扬州派。其刀法遒劲利落,圆朱文犹工,当时著名画家王?、吴历之印,多出其手。
